Exhibition of Indigenous Brazilian Art
The Liberty Museum & Arts Center will present an exhibition of native Brazilian art objects, opening on Saturday. October 4, running through Sunday, November 16th.
Saturday, November 11th at 1 PM, Ed Ziff of Swan Lake, will present a talk about his time in Brazil, discussing the artifacts, play the rattles, and discuss the tribe with a video of their dedication after the rebuilding of their burnt ceremonial structure. The objects were made by members of the Guarani-Kaiowá tribe, an indigenous community in the Brazilian of State of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the Central West region of Brazil, include traditional clay ceramics and ceremonial rattles . The ceramics are depictions of local animals, as well as jugs and a decorative panel. The ceremonial rattles are painted gourds decorated with feathers that are used in indigenous religious ceremonies. The exhibition will be accompanied by photographs showing the making of the ceramics and a video showing the use of the rattles in a tribal ceremony dedicating a new thatched prayer house (Casa de Reza) in the Jaguapiru aldeia (village or reservation), near Dourados, MS.
